A couple of months ago Harry Flanagan joined Game Republic and shared Save Room Club with us. As well as being a developer and game designer, Harry heads up the Save Room Club. He describes it as “like a book club… but for video games!” We asked Harry to tell us more…
The Save Room Club is a community set up with the idea of getting people together to think about games critically in a casual, friendly, social environment as well as collectively allowing us to experience new games and broaden the kinds of games we play.
How does the club work?
At the start of each month, a game is randomly selected from a pool of suggestions submitted by club members and based on some guidelines (e.g. whether it can realistically be completed within a month, price range, genre etc.), which is announced on social media and from there, we all play the same game throughout the month.
At the end of the month, we meet up to discuss the game both in person (for those who can make it) as well as online in our Discord server. This is where we share our thoughts (both good and bad) about the gameplay, story, visuals, characters and anything else that might be relevant! The Discord server is also used as a hub for everyone to get together, chat, discuss games we are looking forward to and is a great place to make new friends.
Our in-person meet-ups currently take place in York at the end of the month. There’s no pressure to come to the meet-ups; you and your friends could even arrange your own meet-ups if you play along. After we discuss the game, we each write a short review, summarising our thoughts on the game and then these are shared on our social media platforms. Then the cycle continues with another game!

ANYONE!
Whether you consider yourself someone who casually plays games or are an avid experienced gamer, we want this club to be for everyone interested in games. You can join in anytime, be involved as much or as little as you want – we just want you to have fun and help you discover new games that you wouldn’t normally play and have a place to discuss them!
We believe that the stories & worlds games can bring to us are infinitely better when shared. So tell your friends, your brothers, sisters, parents, aunties, uncles, cousins, dogs, cats… (We don’t discriminate) and let’s discover some new games together!
