Sheffield’ Sumo Digital won 2 BAFTAs for Sackboy: A Big Adventure on PlayStation 5
Ex-students from Sheffield Hallam University that swept the awards at the Game Republic Student Showcase, have won three BAFTA Game Awards at the ceremony held on Thursday 25th March 2021.
Members of the Steel Minions team, who were awarded the Student Showcase first prizes in Game Technology, Game Design and Best Team for their game Bounceback in 2012, went on to work for UK games studios Sumo Digital and Rare, who last night scooped BAFTAs for the games Sackboy: A Big Adventure and Sea of Thieves respectively.
Sackboy: A Big Adventure, a platforming sequel to the hugely popular Little Big Planet games on PlayStation, won two BAFTAs for Best Family Game and British Game for Sumo Digital in Sheffield, while Sea of Thieves, an open-world online pirate action-adventure from Rare, plundered a BAFTA for Best Evolving Game. For the latter, you can see the amazing artwork from ex-Steel Minion Victoria Hall, now Senior Concept Artist at Rare, here.
“It’s humbling to see the incredible career trajectories of previous Student Showcase winners,” said Dr Jacob Habgood, Director of Education Partnerships at Sumo Digital. “It’s a great testament to the hard work that Game Republic has put into the running such an important regional competition over many years.”
The Game Republic Student Showcase 2021 is scheduled to take place online on Wednesday 26th May with up to 15 universities and colleges showing their final-year student projects, judged by studios including Sumo Digital, Red Kite Games and Rebellion North, with sponsorship from Barclays. You can check out last year’s event here. Congratulations again to GR member Sumo Digital for their double BAFTA success for the brilliant Sackboy: A Big Adventure!
