A Very British Campaign (for D n D

We are seeing increasingly creative Kickstarter campaigns lately and can’t wait to hear the latest from the global leading crowdfunding platform at our Game Republic New Horizons event on 16th October, when Asher McClennahan, Head of Games for Kickstarter flies in from New York to join us. We wonder what he will make of this new kickstarter from World 1-1 studio. They explain how this has come about.

“A Very British Campaign began almost by accident. While we were pushing a VR game for funding, Mia suggested running a Dungeons & Dragons session, but as ourselves, set in York. I started writing the campaign, and what began as a bit of fun quickly spiralled. Would ghosts pay council tax? Would Dracula be running the coin machines in Whitby? Somewhere along the line, it stopped being a session and started becoming a setting.

Around the same time, a friend was looking to move back to the UK, so we reached out about artwork. With the frustration of waiting for VR funding, and the inspiration of Kickstarter’s Witchstarter event, we decided it was time to just go for it. We hit launch.

It is a love letter to growing up in the UK, set in modern times but with a touch of Arthurian myth and the occasional dragon. It’s whimsical, a bit ridiculous, and proudly British, like the old seaside postcards that inspired it.

The book is a full 5E supplement, featuring new ancestries, subclasses, spells, and monsters inspired by everyday life in Britain. Expect postbox mimics, jellied eel gelatinous cubes, queueing monks, and just like in real life a cup of tea has healing properties!

We started it as our weekly campaign, just an excuse to catch up and eat biscuits together. Now we can’t walk through a car boot sale without wondering what magical items might be hiding on the tables. It’s all about finding the magic in the mundane, to bring people together, just like it did for us.”
