Game Republic

Dark and Doomy event in March – games legends, signings and comedy in Wakefield

A special “Dark and Doomy” Game Republic event is being held on Thursday 19th March from 4pm – 8.30pm at the WX venue in Wakefield! GR will be hosting a fireside chat with two games legends – the godfather of the first-person shooter and cofounder of id Software and programmer, game and level designer on classic games Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM and Quake, John Romero, as well as the BAFTA award-winning designer and artist on games such as Wizardry and Ghost Recon, Brenda Romero. You’ll also be able to buy exclusive merch and have your games and items signed by John and Brenda.

The event will also host a selection of fantastic Doom-inspired indie games, then in the evening you’ll be able to enjoy the outrageous laugh-out-loud live action video game-themed comedy show The Dark Room, where you and the audience have to escape an insane room full of deathtraps and fiendish puzzles. Described as a show “not to be missed”; by The Guardian. If you’re a games fan, this is an evening you won’t want to miss!

The Dark Room has racked up sold-out Edinburgh Fringes, become an actual videogame and appeared at Insomnia Gaming Festival, Soho Theatre, PAX Australia, EGX, 21Soho, UK Games Expo, BlueDot, Melbourne Comedy Festival and on the global front page of the streaming platform Twitch.

John Romero is considered to be the “father of first-person shooters” having led the design and contributed to the programming and audio design of the iconic and genre-defining games Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, Quake, Heretic and Hexen, and his products have won well over 100 awards. His memoir DOOM Guy was launched in July 2023 to critical acclaim. Brenda Romero is a BAFTA award-winning game designer, artist and Fulbright recipient. She has worked on over 50 games, including seminal titles in the Wizardry, Ghost Recon and Dungeons & Dragons franchises.

GR members can access the Brenda and John Romero fireside chat and signing, as well as play a selection of indie games for free from 4pm and also pay just £5 to our chosen charity SpecialEffect to access the The Dark Room.
There will be an evening event for the public to attend for just £10 which can be booked directly from the WX website.
