A new Game Jam will be happening in York and North Yorkshire in June. The Game Jam will be an intensive, 48-hour competition for local videogame professionals, video game enthusiasts and university students to gather together to rapidly design and create new digital games.
Part of the Extending XR skills development programme from the team at XR Stories, the Game Jam is being delivered in partnership with the York Game Maker’s Guild and supported by Game Republic.
Running from 10:00am to 6:00pm on both Friday 5 June and Saturday 6 June at Patch York, the Game Jam provides a unique opportunity for emerging talent to share and build skills by collaborating with peers and industry mentors.
Who should attend
The Game Jam is open to anyone with skills in programming, design, 2D and 3D art, animation, music composition, narrative writing, plus any other relevant areas. Intermediate to advanced levels of experience are encouraged.
What to expect
- Form teams and get the theme: At the start of the Game Jam, participants will be grouped into teams of five or six and a secret theme will be revealed for the game creation challenge!
- Rapid development: Participants will work with peers to conceive, code, and design a new game within the 48-hour timeframe. The goal is skills-sharing, upskilling, collaboration and friendly competition.
- Networking: Throughout the Game Jam, attendees will connect with peers and mentors, including dedicated networking drinks on the final evening (5pm to 8pm on Saturday 6 June)
- Judging and prizes: Participant teams must submit their final games by 4pm on Saturday 6 June. A panel of industry experts will judge the games across a series of criteria, with a prize awarded to the winner. Participants will also have an opportunity to play each other’s games.
IP and Logistics
- Intellectual Property (IP): You made it, you keep it: Each game jam participant team will jointly own all code, art, music, and design for the game created, with standard joint ownership in equal shares. Games must be created using original content only (existing IP cannot be brought in). Teams grant the organisers (XR Stories and partners) a non-exclusive license to showcase the games for promotional purposes.
- Catering and equipment: Lunch is provided on both days. Please bring your own laptop and necessary equipment.
- Accessibility: The PATCH venue is wheelchair accessible. A quiet space and prayer rooms can be made available upon request to accommodate any access or individual needs. Please detail any access requirements during sign-up.
