Double Eleven has announced on their LinkedIn account that CEO, Lee Hutchinson has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science by Teesside University in recognition of his entrepreneurial vision, strong leadership and his outstanding contribution to the games industry.
MD of Game Republic Jamie Sefton has responded to the news by sending congratulations to Lee “Lee has led the team at Double Eleven to incredible achievements. The studio plays a major role in games development in The North and indeed globally. We could not be happier that his efforts have been recognised. Lee and Double Eleven provide significant support to our industry and play such an important role in our creative industries and to enhancing the aspirations and opportunities of people in The North.”
From Graduate to Global Games Studio Leader
Lee studied at Teesside University and graduated in 2002 with a first class honours degree in Visualization. Lee worked his way up through the industry as a programmer with, according to a post about the honorary doctorate “a strong work ethic, passion for his craft and determination to be the best that set the foundations to turn his dream into reality.”
The post goes on to say that “The rest, as they say, is history. From humble beginnings working out of his bedroom back in 2009 to working off a Director’s loan operating from a start-up hub at Teesside’s Digital City, Lee has grown Double Eleven from a small unknown game development studio into the incredible global success it is today supporting over 450 amazing people across Middlesbrough and Kuala Lumpur.
Under Lee’s leadership, Double Eleven has grown beyond recognition notching up an incredible ‘who’s who’ list in global IPs like Minecraft, Fallout and Red Dead Redemption all while keeping the studio independent and grounded in Teesside.
