Tuesday 19th April 2011: Game Republic has announced details of the fourth annual Student Showcase 2011, which is to be held at Leeds Metropolitan University on Tuesday 24th May. The Showcase is a fantastic opportunity for final-year and postgraduate games course students from universities that are Educational Partners of the network, to display their best work to the biggest developers in the region including Sumo Digital, Just Add Water and Revolution Software, who are also sponsoring the event. Last year’s Student Showcase featured more than 80 students and 22 projects.
“The Game Republic Student Showcase is an essential annual event that strengthens the relationship between games companies and universities in the north,” says Managing Director of Game Republic, Jamie Sefton. “This year, with universities including Leeds Met, Sheffield Hallam and Bradford on board as full Educational Partners, it’s going to be an even bigger event.”
Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in four categories – Game Design, Game Art, Game Technology and Best Team, and previous awards have led to work placements for more than a dozen winners and full-time employment for two graduates. After the Student Showcase award presentations, there will also be a special talk from Andy Brammall, Unity Technologies.
“Leeds Metropolitan University is very proud to be hosting this event, after participating in the competition for the last three years,” commented Bal Singh, BSc (Hons) Games Design Course Leader, Leeds Metropolitan University. “We welcome our fellow universities from the north and look forward to seeing all the region’s students competing and raising the bar yet again in terms of creativity and fully functional games. The games companies have shown once again that they are keen to support this event in terms of giving their invaluable comments and judgment to all of the competing teams.”
“Revolution Software is happy to be a sponsor and judge of the Game Republic Student Showcase,” added Charles Cecil, Managing Director of Revolution Software. “The Showcase is a fantastic opportunity for the students, and as games companies, we get to see some of the best of the next generation of games development talent.”
