WX Games Weekend Update

Over 6000 people are expected to come to the WX Games Weekend on 8/9 March. The event will see the biggest collection of FREE games to play from new and old in one space in The North and will take place from 10am-5pm on Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sunday. The event is organised by Wakefield Council and has been developed by Game Republic with support from Replay Events, Endpoint Sports, Wakefield College to name a few…

So what can you look forward to seeing at the event…

We will have a playable selection of the very best consoles and computers – from 8 Bit / 16 Bit wonders like the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum, Super Nintendo and Sega Megadrive through to the last few generations of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo consoles and a wide selection of modern PlayStation 5 and Xbox games to play
As well as classic games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Brothers, our retro zone will have a lightgun feature and rhythm game section so you can shake your thing or prove you’re the sharpest shooter in the west! As well as arcade cabinets such as Pac-Man and Donkey Kong to play
Coming with a group of friends? We’ve got you covered with our Multiplayer Games area! Challenge your besties to a few laps of Mario Kart on the Nintendo Gamecube or a round of Goldeneye – last person standing wins! Or join us at the Halo “ring” of consoles for multiplayer

Plus there will be merch stands with plushies, games, consoles and more

Endpoint esports will be bringing some Multiplayer competitions and challenges for Rocket League and you will be given the opportunity to challenge various influencers including Miss Carpenator, Jademclaire and Hoppytye!

Wakefield College will be providing drop-in workshops throughout the day where you can create your own games character drop-in workshops – create a character then see them in a game and play the game at home via itch.io! All day upstairs at WX.

Also Wakefield College have a stand on the show floor where you will be able to find out more about the qualifications needed for a career in games

Talks will be happening throughout the two day celebration of all things games

Sarah York

Founder of the fabulous new games studio Panda Cat, Sarah discusses her career in games and the creation of their new Studio Ghibli-influenced game Spirits of Heartwood.

Yorkshire games studio Melon Games was set up by young brothers Ollie and Ben Chisman, who talk about their latest game Down in the Depths Blind.

Nigel runs mayamada, a manga brand that reaches across comics and games and is also here to discuss his “Do I Look Like a Gamer” initiative to improve representation and diversity in the games industry.
