The Game Republic Awards are now open and all nominations, shortlists and winners will be reviewed and approved by Boss Judge Keith Stuart, who has been games editor and games correspondent for the Guardian. Keith Stuart is a veteran journalist and critic, specialising in video games, film and digital culture. As well as being both games editor and games correspondent for the Guardian, Keith has written for Edge, The Official PlayStation Magazine, T3, Empire, GamesRadar, Eurogamer and many other publications. He has spoken about immersive entertainment at Bafta and the NFTS, and is on the advisory committee of the National Videogame Museum. He is also the best-selling author of novels The Boy Made of Blocks, The Frequency of Us and Love is A Curse.
Discussing the special role he will play at this year’s Awards, Keith said “The best part of my job as a video game journalist is getting to meet developers and discover amazing, innovative new work. It was such a thrill, then, to be invited to judge The Game Republic Awards, and to celebrate the rich heritage and history of game creation in the North of England. I can’t wait to play.”
In addition Fee Laming will be chairing the judges for the shortlist for the Best Indie Game Made in the North from September 2023 – November 2024 and the shortlist will be subject to a public vote.
The Game Republic Awards were hosted for the first time in 2023 to mark Game Republic’s 20th Anniversary. Following the success of the event in raising awareness of the incredible work going on in studios and by individuals in the North, the event will run again with winners revealed at GaMaYo on 21st November where Keith will be presenting the Awards to the winners. Sponsors of the awards include Barclays, Red Kite Games, Escape Technology and Eaton Smith Solicitors. More news on sponsors and nominees will be revealed over the coming months.
Jamie Sefton MD of Game Republic explains “The Game Republic Awards give us a chance to celebrate the talent we have in Yorkshire, the North West and the North East and highlights companies who are working from within the region or with the region to produce fantastic games, working environments, communities and more. This year we will also be selecting the best indie game produced in the North which is really exciting!”
