‘A Day In The Life Of A Game Industry Junior’ with Ruth Dickens from Game Republic’s Official Partner and multi award-winning studio Red Kite Games was “super informative” and “brilliant” with “a great range of pre-prepared questions” and from “a perspective that isn’t often heard from that often” according to student club members that attended the Game Republic Student Club’s first online event on Wednesday 30th April.
The event, packed with information on a Junior’s role, responsibilities, advice proved to be a successful and a great start to the student club’s event programme. While the event had a substantial audience, it will be available to all members of the student club via a recorded playback to ensure that those who missed it can also gain the great insight that Ruth gave.
Some key insights from the event highlighted how Juniors may have imposter syndrome at first, but the learning curve provided by their work can boost their confidence with every completed task and provide opportunity to increase their knowledge with help from colleagues. Ruth also highlighted that Juniors should not be scared to ask the wrong questions, as Seniors on their team are often more than willing to help.
As a Programmer, Ruth shared her insight on the daily tasks assigned to her as well as how the programming team collaborates on a wider scale, offering advice about which languages to learn and what resources she used to upscale her professional skills.
Hermione Khan, the student club’s manager and event host, says “The event was enjoyable not only for our members but myself included. As the student club progresses, I am looking forward to meeting a range of game developers that can give insight and advice in their roles. I also look forward to growing the student club and fostering this new community of games industry professionals.”
